Machico
|
Machico is the original capital of Madeira, as well as one of it. Both discoverers divided the island on instruction of their Portuguese king into two districts. While Funchal on the one side bloomed and grew, Machico didn't develop the same way. Today it is an idyllic village, which is also, like Funchal, surrounded by the mountains. A very nice place to be.
However, more interesting and more entertaining than the younger history is a legend which curls round the choice of the naming of Machico, which is told in a few sentences. All of those who do not like stories á la Pilcher can just go on to the next page - it becomes sentimentally now...
Once there was a beautiful young girl in English country, born from good home but unhappy way had fallen in love with a poor guy. The parents did, of course, not agree to this connection. When it became more serious, and they already thought about marriage, they prohibited their daughter to have contact with the poor boy anymore. They even already looked for another man for their daughter. But she did not agree with that at all. She left the island with her lover and a few friends by boat over night, and landed after long time on another island - Madeira. For the beautiful young girl the journey had probably been too cumbersome, because she already died after a short time. Then, from loud sorrow, her lover also died. Their friends buried the both and set up a cross. Then they left back to England.
When this place was discovered, one found the grave of the both with the cross showing the name of the husband. His name was Robert Machin. So this place should have got its name. Does not touch?
