Another expression of the deep solidarity of the Madeirian with their island and their nature is the flower-festival taking place annually in the spring. To this opportunity, the natives show themselves and the visitors of Madeira the almost infinite fullness and variety of the plant world. Affectionate and extremely sumptuously with flowers decorated cars and actors drive and dance along the harbor-street along Funchal highly into the city center. The issue appears very laboriously, if one considers, that the foot-groups stroll along the streets singing without pauses to the Madeira-typical folklore-music. Conspicuous, the quite high share of very young performers, who make the weekend an impressive event for natives and visitors likewise with their dedication and enthusiasm. Every year, the festival stands under another motto. This year (May 2003, meanwhile our third visit to the island Madeira) it was: "Madeira - Island of love".
